Many beaches have gentle slopes into the water, making them perfect for toddlers taking their first steps in the sea.

1. Fenals Beach -- Your Home Beach

Perfect for: All ages | Distance: 5-minute walk from the penthouse

Fenals Beach is the closest option to our penthouse and arguably the best family beach in Lloret de Mar. It's significantly quieter than the main town beach while still offering excellent facilities.

During summer, professional lifeguards watch over the beach from 10am to 7pm. The sand slopes gently into the water, creating a natural shallow area perfect for little ones to splash around safely. You'll find sunbed and umbrella rentals, nearby restaurants serving everything from paella to ice cream, and public showers to rinse off the sand before heading home.

Pro tip: Arrive before 10am to claim a spot near the left side of the beach where the water is calmest and there's natural shade from the cliffs in the afternoon.

2. Lloret de Mar Main Beach

Best for: Ages 5+ | Distance: 15-minute walk

The main beach in Lloret de Mar is larger and more lively than Fenals. It's a great choice for families with older children who enjoy a bit more action. The beachfront promenade has a playground at the southern end, and there are water sports available including paddleboarding and kayaking.

The beach has full facilities: lifeguards, first aid, accessible ramps, restaurants, and shops. The downside is that it gets crowded in July and August, so arrive early if you visit during peak season.

Pro tip: Walk to the far end near Sa Caleta for fewer crowds and calmer water.

3. Cala Boadella

Perfect for: Toddlers | Distance: 10-minute walk through gardens

Cala Boadella is a hidden gem tucked away behind the Jardines de Santa Clotilde. This small, sheltered cove has crystal-clear, shallow water that barely reaches knee height for the first several meters -- ideal for confident toddlers.

The walk through the botanical gardens adds a sense of adventure for older kids. It's less commercial than the main beaches, so bring your own water, snacks, and shade. The surrounding pine trees provide some natural shelter from the midday sun.

Pro tip: The path down can be steep with a pushchair. A baby carrier works better for this beach.

4. Santa Cristina Beach

Perfect for: All ages | Distance: 10 minutes by car

Situated between Lloret and Blanes, Santa Cristina is a beautiful crescent of sand backed by pine trees. The combination of good facilities and a more natural setting makes it a family favourite.

Waves are typically gentle here, and there's a gradual entry into the water. Pine trees at the edges of the beach provide natural shade, which is perfect for setting up a base with young children. There's parking nearby, plus a couple of restaurants right on the beach.

Pro tip: The beach has a small chapel (Ermita de Santa Cristina) that's worth a quick visit with curious older children.

5. Sa Caleta

Best for: Ages 3+ | Distance: 40-minute walk

Sa Caleta is a tiny, picturesque cove at the southern end of Lloret de Mar's main beach. Flanked by dramatic rock formations, it feels like a private beach despite being easy to reach.

The water is exceptionally calm and clear, making it ideal for snorkelling with older kids. It's small, so it fills up quickly in summer. There are no facilities directly on the beach, but the main beach amenities are a short walk away.

Pro tip: Bring water shoes -- the entry is rocky in places.

6. Cala Canyelles

Best for: Ages 4+ | Distance: 10 minutes by car

A sheltered cove north of Lloret with a beach bar, sunbed rental, and kayak hire. The bay is well-protected from waves, making it safe for swimming. There's a small car park, though it fills up by midday in summer.

7. Platja de Treumal

Perfect for: All ages | Distance: 15 minutes by car

Located near Blanes, Treumal is divided into two sections. The southern part is quieter and has fine golden sand. Shallow waters make it excellent for young children, and there's a lifeguard service in summer.

8. Cala Sant Francesc

Best for: Ages 5+ | Distance: 20 minutes by car

This stunning cove near Blanes is surrounded by lush vegetation. It's a bit of a walk down from the car park, but the reward is crystal-clear water in a beautiful natural setting. Basic beach bar facilities available.

9. Platja de Blanes

Perfect for: All ages | Distance: 15 minutes by car

The main beach of the neighbouring town of Blanes offers excellent family facilities: playgrounds, a long promenade for scooters and bikes, and plenty of restaurants. It's wide enough that you can always find space.

10. Cala Giverola

Best for: Ages 6+ | Distance: 25 minutes by car

A spectacular cove near Tossa de Mar that feels truly wild. The snorkelling here is some of the best on the Costa Brava. Access is via a winding road, and there's a beach bar and sunbed rental. Better suited to families with older, confident swimmers.

Practical Tips for Beach Days with Kids

Best times to visit: Head to the beach before 11am or after 4pm to avoid the strongest sun. Spanish families typically arrive late morning and stay through lunch.

What to pack: High-factor suncream (reapply every 2 hours after swimming), hats, rash vests for extended play, water shoes for rocky beaches, a pop-up shade tent, and plenty of water.

Sun safety: The Mediterranean sun is intense, especially between noon and 3pm. Even on cloudy days, UV levels can be high. Use SPF 50+ on young skin.

Spanish beach etiquette: Topless sunbathing is common on Spanish beaches. Smoking is banned on many Catalan beaches. Keep noise levels reasonable during the afternoon siesta hours.

Jellyfish awareness: Jellyfish are occasionally spotted, usually in late summer. Beaches display warning flags -- pay attention to them. If stung, rinse with sea water (not fresh water) and seek the lifeguard station.
